22 MARTYRED FOR COMPLETING AN ATHAAN- 13th July 1931

On the 13th July, the day in 1931 when twenty-two Kashmiri civilians gave their lives in a tragic but brave incident for the believers that lives in the memory of millions as a story of courage and sacrifice.

The 22 Kashmiris were killed for reciting the Muslim call to prayer, or azaan, which was banned in Kashmir at the time. One by one, they stepped forward to recite as each was killed by a single bullet.

In 1846, Britain as a colonial power sold Kashmir to a wealthy Indian Maharaja named Gulab Singh. He was a ruthless monarch. He set out to humiliate the majority Kashmiri Muslims. In July 1931, Singh banned the azaan, the call to prayer rendered at mosques.

A Kashmiri man, named Abdulqadir, was arrested by maharaja’s soldiers and tried for sedition. On the day of his trial, on 13 July 1931, thousands of Kashmiris gathered outside the prison awaiting the result of the trial. During the wait, it was noon prayer time, known to Muslims as Zohr. One Kashmiri stood up and recited the azaan. Before he could complete it, he was shot and killed by maharaja’s police. Another Kashmiri man took his place and attempted to complete the azaan but was shot to death. A third man rose, and then a fourth. In the end, a total of twenty-two men were killed, each one of them having recited a part of the call to prayer until it was read out in full.

This is what Islam is all about, giving your life and wealth for the name of Allah Ta’laa to be raised. This is truly an inspiring incident. How sad is the situation today that we fail to keep silent and respond to the Athaan and Iqaamah when it is being recited.

Dua’s Accepted At The Time Of Athaan

Hadhrat Sahl ibn Sa’d Radhiyyallahu Anhu reported:

Rasullullah Sallallaahu Wa Sallam said,

Two supplications are not rejected, or seldom rejected: the supplication at the call to prayer and under the rain.

The Virtue Of The Honourable Caller Of Athaan

Hadhrat Abu Huraira Radhiyalluhu Anhu reported :

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The caller to prayer is forgiven as far as his voice is heard. Every creature on land or sea will testify for him. Whoever is present at the prayer will have a reward multiplied by twenty five times and his sins will be expiated between two prayers.”

Attain The Intercession Of Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam

Jabir ibn Abdullah Radhiyalluhu Anhu reported

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever hears the call to prayer and says,

‘O Allah, Sustainer of this perfect call and established prayer, give Muhammad the means of nearness and the most excellent reward, and raise him to the praiseworthy station that You have promised him,’

then my intercession will be allowed for him on the Day of Resurrection.

A Strategic Approach

  1. Express gratitude for this great bounty of the Athaan called out five times a day. Give Sadaqah as a token of appreciation.
  2. Respond and encourage others to be silent and respond when the Athaan is being called out
  3. Men should hasten towards Salaah and women should perform in the best place prescribed for you which is the home.
  4. Recite the dua after Athaan
  5. Appreciate our Mua’dhins and empower them by correcting their pronunciation.
  6. Istighfaar and remorse that we don’t appreciate the symbols of Allah Ta’laa and dua that Allah Ta’laa continues to allow us to enjoy this great bounty.

“if one observes the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, then such things emanate from the piety of the hearts.”
