- Mufti Muhammed Shafee Rahmatullahi ‘alaihi was born on the 21st of Sha’baan 1314AH (25th January 1897). He was given the name “Muhammed Shafi” by his father’s Sheikh, Hadhrat Moulana Rashid Gangohi Rahmatullahi ‘alaihi, though his orginal name was “Muhammed Mubin.”

When Moulana Mahmud was imprisoned in Malta, Mufti Shafi Saheb consulted Hadhrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Rahmatullahi ‘alaihi. Moulana Mahmud Hasan returned to Deoband on 20 Ramadan 1338 AH (June 1920). In 1339 AH (1920) Shafi gave bay’at (allegiance) at his hand. However, Moulana Mahmud Hasan returned to the mercy of Allah Ta’alaa a few months later on 18 Rabi al-awwal.
- Mufti Shafi returned to Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Rahmatullahi ‘alaih. In Rabi ath-thaani 1349AH, Mufti Saheb received ijaazat-i-bay’at (persmission to take followers) and khilafah (spiritual successorship) directly from Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Rahmatullahi alaihi. Hakimul Ummah would consult with Mufti Shafi Saheb on many issues.
- Mufti Saheb put together one of the most trusted Tafseer in recent times known as Maariful Quraan at the peak of his sickness and then it was later translated to English.
