When in Doubt, Leave out: The Case of Habib ‘Umar

Mufti Abdullah Moolla writes:

In the recent past, South Africa has been the destination of a large number of problematic figures, varying in the degree of their influence and deviance, in order to sway the Muslim public away from traditional Islam, and into every form of un-Islamic ism.

Alhamdulillah, through the efforts of the sincere Ulama and Muslim public, these figures have been exposed, sometimes as problematic, sometimes as heretical, and at other times, as total frauds. May Allah continue to accept this work, and may he save us all from falling into deviation. Ameen

One of the aims of these foreign figures is to establish bases within South Africa in order to help their cause of turning the Muslim public away from the traditional practice of Islam, in line with the beliefs and practices of the Ahl-us-Sunnah wal Jama’ah.

One of the figures, about whom evidence has surfaced is Habib ‘Umar of Yemen. There are reports of his pious past and links with the Tabligh Jama’at, but recent activity shows some very problematic and heretical practices done by himself, his followers, and students.

We cannot continue in the world of wishful thinking, whilst living in a world filled with religious deception. Does the hadith not teach us to leave all that which puts you into doubt?

The evidence about Habib ‘Umar must first be examined before jumping to his defence. It must not be that in our supposed good akhlaaq, our supposed husn udh dhann, our supposed reliance on the outer, we end up defending the cause of deviation – which would prove much worse in the long run.

There are some people who simply refuse to examine the evidence about Habib ‘Umar, thinking that it will simply vanish. No, the stench of deviation spreads and surfaces in more ways than one. It will soon boil over.

Those who have been bitten by figures like Muhammad Hijab and Omar Suleiman ought to be the first to doubt another problematic figure, in this case, Habib ‘Umar. However, we find that once again, like blind mice and dumb sheep, no serious questions are posed, no thorough investigations are done, and no significant awareness is created in order to save the imaan and practices of the Muslims in South Africa and elsewhere. This is regret, shame, remorse all in one. May Allah have mercy upon our pitiable state. Ameen

Remember that figures like Mirza Qadiyani, Khomeini, and Musaylamah al-Kadh-dhab all had some degree of influence over the masses who got swayed by their deviance. Numbers of followers have no bearing on whether a person is genuinely guided and upon the truth.

The very least that a person can do is stay away. Encourage others to investigate and find out the reality. May Allah Ta’ala give us the understanding to fulfil our responsibilities as students and scholars of the Deen of Islam, and may he save us from falling for deviation, and selling the Deen for a two-cent piece. Ameen
