Dreams of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه و سلم

It is reported from ‘Nuzhatul Basaa’tin that, Ibrahim bin Khawaaz Radiyallaahu anhu says, ” Once on journey I felt such extreme thirst and I fell down unconscious. While I lay there, I felt someone sprinkling water on my face. When I opened my eyes I saw a handsome young man on horseback near me. He gave me water to drink and begged me to accompany him. After having travelled but a little while, he asked me, ‘ What do you see? ‘ I replied, ‘This is Medina’. He said,’ You may descend here. Go to the holy grave of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi Wa-Sallam and give him my Salaam. Tell him that his brother Khidar greets him’.

Sheikh Abdul Khair Aqta Radiyallaahu anhu says, ” When I came to Medina, I had been there for 5 days, and I did not find any gratification or pleasure. I therefore went to the grave of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi Wa-Sallam and greeted him, and also the graves of Abu Bakr Radiyallaahu anhu and Umar Radiyallaahu anhu and then said to Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam , ‘ O Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam today I want to be your guest’. Thereafter I left that spot and went to sleep behind the mimbar. In a dream I saw Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam with Abu Bakr Radiyallaahu anhu on his right hand side and Umar Radiyallaahu anhu on his left hand side and Ali Radiyallaahu anhu infront of him. Ali Radiyallaahu anhu came to me and said, ‘ Rise up Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam is coming’. I hastily rose from my resting place and kissed the Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam between his eyes. He gave me one bread, from which I ate one half and kept the other half. When I woke up from this dream, the other half of the bread was in my hand’.

Hazrat Sheikh ul Mashaaikh, Shah Waliullah Radiyallaahu anhu wrote a book ‘Hirze Thameen Fi’Mubasshiraat An-Nabi al-Ameen’, in which he has mentioned 40 of his own and his father’s dreams and divine inspirations wherein they saw Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam. In one of those dreams mentioned in number 12, Shah Waliullah writes, “One day I was suffering extreme hunger. I prayed to Allah and soon thereafter saw that the soul of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam had descended from the heavens. With him he had a bread as if Allah had sent him with this bread to feed me, “ In number 13, Shah Saheb Rahmatullahu ‘Alaihi writes, ” One night I could find nothing to eat. One of my friends brought a bowl of milk and gave it toe to drink. Having drunk I fell asleep and in my dream I saw Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam, he said to me, “ the milk that you drank was sent by me. I had cast the thought into his heart and he should give it to you to drink”. ( This is what is called ‘ Tawaajjuh’ among the sufis – that telepathy of drawing attention-). The tawajjuh of the saintly sufis is an accepted fact. So why not the tawajjuh of the Nabi of Allah Ta’ala?

Under number 15 Shah Saheb Radiyallaahu anhu writes, “My father related that while he was unwell once, he saw Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam in a dream.
Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam asked, ‘ Oh my son, how are you? ‘ Then he gave the good news that soon he would be healed. Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam handed him 2 strands of hairs from his beard. When he woke up he found the 2 hairs still in his hand. He kept his hairs and later gave one of them to me ‘.”

Under dream number 18 Shah Saheb Radiyallaahu anhu writes, my father told me, ” While I was in the initial stage of my Islamic studies, I had the intention to continue fasting at all times. But I hesitated to do so because of the various opinions of the Ulama, regarding this matter. Then I saw Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam in a dream. In the dream he gave me a loaf of bread. Abu Bakr Radiyallaahu anhu and Umar Radiyallaahu anhu were also present and Abu Bakr Radiyallaahu anhu said,
Presents given in a company becomes the property of all.

I therefore broke the bread and gave him a piece. Then Umar Radiyallaahu anhu said the same, again I broke the bread and gave a piece to him. Then Uthmaan Radiyallaahu anhu said the same and I said to him, ‘ If this bread will have to be distributed, amd what will remain for a poor destitute one like me? ‘

This is as this story is related in ‘Hirze Thameen’. In another book ‘ Anfaasul A’rifeen’, more detail is mentioned. There Shah Saheb Rahmatullahi ‘Alaihi concluded the story thus,” When I woke up from this dream I sat down to ponder as to why I should be prepared to share the bread with Abu Bakr Radiyallaahu anhu and Umar Radiyallaahu anhu and refuse to do so as far as Uthmaan Radiyallaahu anhu, is concerned. I could only think that as far as my spiritual connection goes, I belong to the Naqshbandia school which is linked to Abu Bakr Radiyallaahu anhu, and secondly as far as blood relationships concerned I am related to Umar Radiyallaahu anhu. Hence I never had the courage to refuse sharing the bread with them but as far as Uthmaan Radiyallaahu anhu was concerned none of these two ties existed; hence. i had the courage to refuse.

The most generous of persons is he who is the most virtuous of mankind. Upon him be the salaat and tasleem.

Shah Waliullah writes further in dream number 19, my father told me,” Once during the month of Ramadhaan, in extreme heat, I had to proceed on a journey. Such was the heat that I suffered terrible discomfort. Sleep overtook me and I saw Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam. With him he had the most delicious food which consisted of rice and sweetmeats, rich with and ghee and of this he gave me to eat. I ate to my fill. Then he gave me water to drink. Which I drank to my fill. Through this, my hunger and thirst disappeared. When I woke from this dream I found the smell of Saffron still on my fingers.”

One should no have any hesitation about accepting these stories and their truth. It has its origin in a saying of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam where discussing continuous fasting without any break in between, he said,

Verily my Sustainer feeds me and gives me to drink.

And he Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam also said, “I not the same as you”

Now that I’d a miracle of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa-Sallam. If some fortunate soul be granted the same, it is a great favor for him. We the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah believe that miracles can happen at the hands of the true saints ( awliyyah). In the Holy Qur’aan we have the miracle of Mariam Alaihas salaam,

Every time that Zakariyyah entered her chamber to see her, he found her supplied with sustenance. ( Aale Imraan – 37)

In other words, every time Zakariyyah Alaihis salaam visited her, he found food and drink with her and on asking her where it came from, she used to reply that it came from Allah, who grants sustenance to whomsoever He pleases, as much as He wishes and whether they are deserving or not. Regarding this food, ‘Durre Manthoor’ reports that baskets of grapes used to be with her out of season when they do not ripen. During summer she used to receive winter fruits and during winter, summer fruits used to arrive at her place.

O Sustainer, shower salaat and salaam forever and ever upon Your beloved, who is the best of all creations.
