THE FALSE BELIEFS:
Regarding the various beliefs about the significance of the Day of Aashoora; many of which are often quoted in our time:
FALSE BELIEF 1 – The person who applies `surmah’ on the Day of Ashura will not have sore eyes for the entire year.
FALSE BELIEF 2 – The person who takes a bath on this day will not fall ill till the next year.
FALSE BELIEF 3 – Qiyaamah will take place on the 10th of Muharram (How could it be when only Allah Ta’alaa knows the time for this and it will come suddenly? Yes the Hadith of Sahih Muslim tells us
CLAIMS such as:
FALSE CLAIM 1. The virtue of Salaah on this day.
FALSE CLAIM 2. On the day the repentance of Adam (Alaihis-Salaam) was accepted.
FALSE CLAIM 3. Ibrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) was removed from the fire.
FALSE CLAIM 4. Ismail (Alaihis-Salaam) was saved from being sacrificed.
FALSE CLAIM 5. Yusuf (Alaihis-Salaam) was returned to Yaqoob (Alaihis-Salaam).
Further, Islam does not preach what the Kuffaar Shia preach. They have turned these days into days of mourning, whereas Muharram is Shahrullah – the month of Allah (See Sahih Muslim). It is a revered month (Surah 9, At-Tawbah Verse 36) not a month of wearing black and going into the closet. The Ummah should stay far away from the Kufr of the Munaafiqeen of this Ummah.
Another false claim is that Qiyaamah will take place on the 10th of Muharram
How could it be when Allah Ta’alaa informs us in the Qur’aan Shareef:
حَتَّىٰ تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةً
until the Hour (Qiyaamah) takes them by surprise
Surah 22 Al-Hajj, Verse 55
According to their lies, if per chance, 10th of Muharram falls on a Friday in a particular year, everybody will be running attempting to rescue themselves. This opposes Nusoos i.e., The Qur’aan Shareef. Yes, this much we can say that Qiyaamah will take place on a Jum’uah as per words of Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam:
وَلاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ إِلاَّ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ
And the last hour will take place on no day other than Friday
Sahih Muslim
Conclusion: There is absolutely no proof other than fabrications claiming that Qiyaamah will take place on Aashoora (10th of Muharram).
TRUE EVENTS WHICH OCCURED ON AASHOORA (THE 10TH OF MUHARRAM)
- Nuh Alaihis Salaam’s ark settled on the Mount of Judiyy on the 10th of Muharram
and the ship came to rest on the [mountain of] Judiyy.
Surah 11, Hud Verse 44
2. Musa Alaihis Salaam and the Bani Israeel were rescued and the Firown, the tyrant saw the result of his pure oppression on Aashoora. From murdering babies to claiming that he is the Lord, he saw the reality of his own doings, sinking. This lesson serves as a reminder to every tyrant who feels untouchable. The Dua of Musa Alaihis Salaam’s showed its powerful effects:
Surah 10, Yunus – Verse 88
And Musa (‘Alaihis Salaam) said: “Our Sustainer! You have indeed bestowed on Fir’aun (Pharaoh) and his chiefs splendour and wealth in the life of this world, our Sustainer! That they may lead men astray from Your Path. Our Sustainer! Destroy their wealth, and harden their hearts, so that they will not believe until they see the painful torment.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu said: Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam passed by people from the Yahood who were fasting on ‘Aashoora. Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam enquired:
“What is the reason for this fast?”
They (the Jews) said:
“This is the day that Allah Taa’alaa rescued Hadhrat Moosa ‘Alaihis Salaam and the Bani Israeel from drowning and on this day Allah Ta’alaa drowned Firoun. And on this day it was that the Ark of Nooh ‘Alaihis Salaam settled on Mount Joodiyy. So Nooh (Alaihis Salaam) and Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) fasted as a token of gratitude.
So Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam said:
“I am more entitled to Moosa ‘Alaihis Salaam and I am more entitled to fast on this day”
Thus Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam instructed his companions (The Sahaabah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhum) to fast”
Musnad Ahmed
From this Hadith it is deduced there are the two above authentic events that took place on the day of ‘Aashura (10th of Muharram)
Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam had instructed to oppose the Jews. Thus to fast one day before and on the day of Aashura or Aashuraa and the day after (9th & 10th or 10th & 11th of Muharram)
Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam said,
“Fast the Day of `Ashura” and be different from the Jews by fasting a day before it or a day after it.”
[Ahmad]
Virtue of the Fast of Aashoora
It expiates the sins of the preceding year
Sahih Muslim
A narration recorded in Musnad Ahmed also encourages fasting a day before and the day after. Thus keeping all three fasts is meritorious, since the Month of Muharram is the best month to fast after Ramadhaan, each day of the month of Muharram is superior (See narration of Sahih Muslim). However to fast the 10th alone is going against the call of Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam. The least, fast either 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th. The rest of the month one can fast as many as possible. Qadhaa fasts will take preference.
Virtue – Day of Forgiveness
“It has a day in which Allah forgave an entire people, and He turns to others in repentance in.”
Tirmidhi
Spending on the Household
(Taken from Hadith Q&A by Moulana Muhammad bin Moulana Haroon Abbasoomar)
Q. What is the virtue of spending on one’s family on the day of ‘Aashura and what is the authenticity of the Hadith that encourages this sort of spending?
(There may be grammatical and spelling errors in the above question. Questions are published as received)
A. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is reported to have said:
“Whoever expands his expenditure on his family on the day of ‘Aashura, Allah will inflate his sustenance for the rest of that year”
This Hadith has been reported by several Sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum), among them are the following:
1) Sayyiduna Jaabir (Al-Istidhkaar of Ibn ‘Abdil Barr, vol.10, pg. 140)
Hafidh Al-‘Iraqi (r.a.) has declared this chain to be par in authenticity with the standards of Imam Muslim (r.a.) (Al-Maqaasidul Hasanah, #1193)
2) Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (Shu’abul Imaan, # 3515, Al-Targheeb, vol.2 pg. 115-116))
Classified as Saheeh (Authentic) by: Hafidh Ibn Naasir (r.a.) (Al-Maqaasidul Hasanah, #1193)
3) Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudry (Shu’abul Imaan, #3514)
4) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (Shu’abul Imaan, #3513)
After recording the above ahadith, Imam Al-Baihaqi (r.a.) comments as follows: “When all the chains of these narrations are gathered, they assume (sufficient) strength”
5) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (Al-Afraad of Daaraqutni, Tanzihu Shari’ah, vol.2, pg. 158)
This has also been reported with a good chain as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (Radiyallahu Anhu) (Al-Afraad of Daaraqutni, see Al-Maqaasidul Hasanah, #1193 & Tanzihu Shari’ah, vol.2, pg. 158)
Furthermore, several narrators of this Hadith have been reported to have echoed the following testimony:
“We have tried this out, and have found it to be accurate”
(Al-Istidhkar, vol.10 pg. 140)
This further strengthens the credibility of the narration.
‘Allamah Al-‘Iraqi (r.a.) has authored a detailed treatise on this Hadith in which he has proven its acceptability beyond a shadow of doubt. He has also vehemently rebutted the assumption of Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah (r.a.) that this Hadith has no basis. Al-‘Iraqi (r.a.) – like many others- has expressed his amazement at such an irrational assertion! (see: Tanzihu Shari’ah, vol.2, pg. 158)
Lastly, this Hadith provides an ideal solution during these times of global financial constraint. The extent of expansion in expenditure will naturally differ from one individual to another.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
