Question:
What duas can we read for traveling?
Answer: A Muslim is structured and unabandoned. In every walk and drive of life, Allah Ta’alaa has left a beautiful example for us.
لَقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِىۡ رَسُوۡلِ اللّٰهِ اُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَنۡ كَانَ يَرۡجُوا اللّٰهَ وَالۡيَوۡمَ الۡاٰخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللّٰهَ كَثِيۡرًا
(21)Translation:
There is indeed a good model for you in the Messenger of Allah (Sallahu Alaihi wa Sallam)- for the one who has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah profusely.
Suratul Ahzaab, verse 21
This is exactly what makes the enemies of Islam hopeless. You have such a beautiful and untainted path to follow that they cannot put their evil stains upon. Now it is just unfortunate that the believer does not take pride in this beautiful path called the Sunnah and opts with pride to follow the hopeless path of Iblees and Allah Ta’alaa’s enemies!
Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) reported that whenever Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) mounted his camel while setting out on a journey, he glorified Allah (said Allah-o-Akbar) thrice:
Dua Upon Leaving: Glorify Allah Ta’alaa
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَر،
Transliteration: Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar,
Translation: Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great
Then read:
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ *وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ
Transliteration: Subḥāna ‘l-ladhi sakhkhara lanā hādhāwa mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn.Wa innā ilā Rabbinā lamunqalibūn.
Translation: Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts.Surely, unto our Lord we are returning
Then ask for spiritual goodness in this journey:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا البِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى،وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى
Transliteration: Allāhumma innā nas’aluka fī safarinā hādha ‘l-birra wat-taqwā,Wa mina ‘l-`amali mā tarḍā
Translation: O Allah, we ask You on this our journey for goodness and piety,and for works that are pleasing to You.
Then beseech Allah Ta’alaa to make the journey easy
،اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ
Transliteration: Allāhumma hawwin `alaynā safaranā hādhāwaṭwi `annā bu`dah
Translation: O Allah, lighten this journey of ours, and make its distance easy for us.
Then Request for Protection for your family at home:
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَليفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ
Transliteration: Allāhumma antas-sāḥibu fis-safar,wa ‘l-khalīfatu fil-ahl,
Translation: You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family.
Also add:
،،اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ
Transliteration: Allāhumma innī a`ūdhu bika min wa`thā’is-safar
Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey’s hardships,
وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ، وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ
Transliteration: wa ka’ābati ‘l-manẓar,wa sū’il-munqalabi fil-māli wa ‘l-ahl.
Translation: and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our family and property in misfortune upon returning.
Dua Upon Returning
Upon returning recite the same again (all of the above) adding:
آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
Transliteration: Ā’ibūna, tā’ibūna, `ābidūn, Li Rabbinā ḥāmidūn
Translation: We return repentant to our Sustainer, worshipping our Sustainer ,and praising our Sustainer.
This should be the practice for every journey not just long distance journeys.
