A Night Better Than Thirty Thousand Nights

Don’t Be Deprived

لَيۡلَةُ الۡقَدۡرِ  ۙ خَيۡرٌ مِّنۡ اَلۡفِ شَهۡرٍؕ

Translation:
The Night of Qadr is much better than one thousand months.
(Al-Quran Verse 3, Chapter 97)

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said when the month of Ramadan began, “Verily, this month has presented itself to you. There is a night within it that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it has been deprived of all good. None is deprived of its good but that he is truly deprived.” (Ibn Majah)

What Is The Meaning Of Qadr?

One meaning of the word Qadr is ‘greatness, honour, majesty or dignity’. The night is called Laylatul Qadr (Night of greatness because it is indeed a night of honour and dignity on account of repentance, seeking pardon and righteous acts during this night, whilst prior to this he might have lacked honour and dignity on account of an unrighteous life he may have led. (Ma’ariful -Quraan)

When Is The Night Of Qadr?

Sayyidah ‘A’isha’s رض narration is recorded in Sahih of Bukhari, according to which the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم is said,

“تحروا ليلة القدر في العشر الأواخر من رمضان” ,

Translation : “Search for the night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan.”

Ibn ‘Umar رض narrates as recorded in Sahih Muslim, that the Messenger of Allah said:

فاطلبوها في الوتر منها

Translation: “Search for it in the last ten odd nights”,

Most eminent jurists- like Aba Qilabah, Imam Malik, Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Sufyan Thawri, Ishaq Ibn Rahwaih, Abu Thawr, Ibn Khuzaimah and others رحمهم الله agree that the night occurs in the last ten odd nights alternating.

All authentic narrations point to this as well that could be one of the following nights : 21, 23, 25, 27 and 29. In this way all traditions are reconciled.

It is recorded in Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of Sayyidna Abu Hurairah (رض) that the Messenger of Allah (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said:

“He who spends the Night of Qadr in the worship of Allah, all his past sins will be forgiven.”

Sayyidna Ibn `Abbas (رض) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said:

“All the angels resident at the ‘Lote Tree of the Uttermost Boundary’ descend in the leadership of Sayyidna Jibra’il (علیہ السلام) and greet every believer, man or woman, except one who takes wine or eats pork.”

Another narration reports that anyone who is deprived of the good of the Night of Qadr is in fact deprived of all good. On the Night of Qadr some people experience and witness special anwar [ lights ].

However, it may be noted that this is not experienced or witnessed by all and sundry nor is it part of the blessings and reward of the Night. Therefore, people should not concern themselves about it,

What Supplication To Make In Abundance

Sayyidah `A’ishah (رض) once asked the Messenger of Allah (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) what supplication she should make if she finds the Night. The Messenger of Allah (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) advised her to make the following supplication:

اللَّھُمَّ اِنَّکَ عَفُوُّ تُحِبُّ العَفوَ فَاعفُ عَنِّی

Transliteration : Allahumma Innaka ‘Afuwun Tuhibul- ‘Afwa Fa’fu ‘An-ni

Allah! Verily, You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so do pardon me.” [ Qurtubi ].
