The Significance of the 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

Tonight, at the time of Maghrib after the Salaah in South Africa and other areas who keep up the law of the golden Shari’ah, will go out to scan the skies in search of the moon with the naked eye, if it is sighted, they will now embrace the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah. The Hujjaaj will be occupied in great ‘Ibaadah during these moments but Allah Ta’alaa has made these days noble for all. Thus we need to realise its importance and once the value is attained by the tawfeeq of Allah Ta’alaa then one will not squander these special moments no matter where they are.

Why are these 10 days so important?

Allah Ta’alaa takes an oath in Chapter 89, Verse 1 & 2:

By the break of the day

By the ten nights

`The ten nights’ refers to the (first) ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. This was said by Hadhrat Ibn `Abbas , Ibn Zubayr, Mujahid Radhiyyallahu ‘anhum.

It has been confirmed in Sahih Al-Bukhari from Abdullah Ibn `Abbas Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam said:,

«مَا مِنْ أَيَّامٍ الْعَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللهِ فِيهِنَّ مِنْ هذِهِ الْأَيَّام»

There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days.) meaning the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. They said, “Not even fighting Jihad in the way of Allah” He replied,

«وَلَا الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، إِلَّا رَجُلًا خَرَجَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْجِعْ مِنْ ذلِكَ بِشَيْء»

Not even Jihad in the way of Allah; except for a man who goes out (for Jihad) with his self and his wealth, and he does not return with any of that.

Clipping the Nails and Trimming the Hair

These acts should be dealt with great care as these noble actions gets one closer and closer to Allah Ta’alaa

Rasulullah (ﷺ) said:

Umm Salama, the wife of Allah’s Rasool (ﷺ), reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) to have said:

He who has a sacrificial animal with him whom (he intends) to offer as sacrifice, and he enters the month of DhuI-Hijjah, he should not get his hair cut or nails trimmed until he has sacrificed the animal.

Muslim 1977

Each Night of the 10 nights Equal to Laylatul Qadr in Ibaadah

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“There are no days more beloved to Allah that He be worshipped in, than the [first] ten days of Dhul Hijjah, fasting each day of them is equivalent to fasting a year, and standing [in ‘ibadah] every night of them  is the equivalent of standing on the Night of Qadr”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 758 and Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 3480)

Sayyidah Hafsah (radiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would never leave out four things,

  1. Fasting on ‘Aashura [10th of Muharram]
  2. Fasting ten days [ie. the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah]
  3. Fasting three days every month
  4. Two rak’ahs [Sunnah] before Fajr

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 2429, Sunan Nasai, Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 2416-2418, Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 6422 and Musnad Ahmad, vol. 6 pg. 287)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) states that to keep these fasts [the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah] is extremely desirable (Mustahabbatun istihbaban shadidan).

Read in abundance whilst walking, sitting laying down:

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Umar Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

There are no days greater and more beloved to Allah than these ten days of Dhul Hijjah, so increase in them your declaration of the oneness of Allah, your exaltation of Him, and your praise of Him.”

The Best Act is Qurbaani

Any person who is Muslim, sane, baaligh and has the Nisaab amount during the days of Eid has to perform Qurbaani (Nisaab currently at R11 300- fluctuates daily). The amount does not have to be in the possession of the person for the whole year. Those who do not have the Nisaab amount should still not lose focus of the importance of this noble act but should make dua, Allah Ta’alaa gives tawfeeq (the ability) to perform Qurbaani.

At times we find ourselves looking for excuses to miss out on such noble investments. The poor Sahaabah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhum were concered, not that they did not have more money to be more extravagant but rather they looked at the wealthier Sahaabah Radhiyallahu ‘Anhum spending more in Zakaat and in the path of Allah Ta’alaa. Subhaanallah! Whilst we compete in plastic cars with labels and structures which will all be demolished upon its appointed time, their worry was solely the Aakhirah. They did not want to lose out. Allah Ta’alaa give us that passion for doing more for Allah Ta’alaa. A person sometimes spends more money so delibarately he does not have the Nisaab amount, then sits back and says, “It is not compulsory upon me”. This is not spirit of Qurbaani!

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu reported: Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa Sallam, said, “No deeds are more pure to Allah Almighty, nor greater in reward, than good deeds performed in the ten days of the month of sacrificing.

Al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub Rahmatullahi ‘Alaihi reported: When Sa’id ibn Jubair Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu reached the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, he would exert himself in worship so greatly that he would nearly overwhelm himself.
